When Jacob is abruptly cut off from his prescription medication, he must navigate withdrawal through a care system that refuses to see him as human.

Hooked is a BFI-shortlisted script which explores addiction, mental health, stigma and systemic failures within recovery services. The script and forthcoming film are based on the true story of a young Sheffield resident, Caleb Hancock, who passed away in supported living accommodation in December 2024 following a long-term addiction to prescription painkillers.

The film wis being made with the support of Caleb’s family and in partnership with The Forward Trust. It includes dozens of real interactions from those navigating addiction and mental health systems.

Created by local filmmakers, Hooked aims to start a vital conversation about mental health and addiction in South Yorkshire.
